MVA (Motor Vehicle Acccident)

Supporting Your Recovery After a Car Accident

Following a motor vehicle accident, it’s very common to experience emotional and psychological distress even when physical injuries appear mild or have already healed. Trauma related to car accidents can affect how you feel, think, sleep, and function in daily life.

At Mandala Therapy Services, we provide trauma-informed MVA therapy in Calgary, supporting individuals as they recover emotionally and psychologically after a collision.

Common Symptoms After a Motor Vehicle Accident

You may notice one or more of the following experiences after an accident:

  • Flashbacks to the accident or medical treatment

  • Nightmares or disturbed sleep

  • Fear of driving or riding in a vehicle

  • Feeling powerless or unable to move forward

  • Anxiety, panic, or constant worry

  • Depression or persistent low mood

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection from loved ones

  • Irritability or explosive anger

  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that remind you of the accident

  • Difficulty concentrating or “brain fog”

  • Grief related to losses caused by the accident

  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

These responses are normal trauma reactions, not personal failings — and they are treatable.

What Is MVA Therapy?

MVA Therapy (Motor Vehicle Accident Therapy) is specialized psychological counselling designed to support recovery from accident-related trauma. Therapy focuses on helping you process what happened, reduce symptoms such as anxiety or flashbacks, and regain a sense of safety and control.

Our clinicians use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches tailored to your needs, pace, and goals.

Do I Qualify for MVA Therapy in Alberta?

In Alberta, you may be eligible for insurance-funded MVA therapy if:

  • You were involved in a motor vehicle accident in Alberta

  • You are experiencing psychological symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, nightmares, panic, emotional distress, or low mood following the accident

  • Your physician believes psychotherapy is a medically necessary part of your recovery

In most cases, fault does not matter.

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to navigate this on your own. Our administrative team is experienced in Alberta MVA claims and can guide you through eligibility, forms, and next steps.

Your Rights Under Alberta MVA Insurance

Alberta’s MVA insurance system is designed to support early access to care following an accident.

Diagnostic and Treatment Protocol Regulation (DTPR)

The DTPR allows individuals injured in a motor vehicle accident to access early treatment — including psychotherapy — without prior insurance approval, provided treatment begins within 90 days of the accident.

This early access is intended to support recovery and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Ongoing Treatment & Recovery Support

If symptoms continue beyond the initial treatment period, extended therapy may be approved when your physician or psychologist determines it remains medically necessary. Coverage may include:

  • Ongoing psychological treatment

  • Disability or income-replacement benefits (if applicable)

  • Additional accident-related supports

Navigating these systems can feel overwhelming — we’re here to make it easier.

How We Support You Through the MVA Insurance Process

Recovering from trauma is hard enough without managing complex insurance paperwork. We support you every step of the way:

  • Insurance liaison: We communicate directly with your insurer and assigned adjuster

  • Physician coordination: We assist with requesting and submitting medical notes when required

  • Form guidance: We help you complete AB-1 (Notice of Loss) and AB-2 (Treatment Plan) forms accurately

  • Direct billing: Once approved, we bill your insurer directly

  • Ongoing updates: We provide required progress updates to support continuity of care

From your first contact to the completion of treatment, our focus stays on your recovery, not the paperwork.

Mental Health Symptoms After a Car Accident

After a collision, emotional symptoms can surface immediately or weeks later. MVA therapy can help if you’re experiencing:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or constant alertness

  • Sleep problems or nightmares

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks

  • Avoidance of driving or being a passenger

  • Irritability, anger, or emotional shutdown

  • Low mood or loss of interest

  • Difficulty focusing or remembering

  • Pain-related stress or fear of re-injury

These are common trauma responses and help is available.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

If you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident and are struggling emotionally, MVA therapy can support your healing and help you feel steady again.

Book a consultation to explore your options or contact our team with questions about coverage, documentation, or direct billing. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
